Harrison Parker Post #2

I've been in the struggle with shooting as my transmitter for my off-camera flashes died on me and am in the works of ordering a new one. while in this slump I was thinking of going towards a more portrait route and asking the subject to wear what they feel the most comfortable in. In my head, this would express the different but the same of how people are. I still want to go with staged narratives but wanted to widen my parameters and almost let the subject do what they want for there photos.

Let me know what yall think.

Gabriel Harris - Post #2

Hi Team, I've figured out what I want to do and how I want to present it. What I am thinking about now is the possibility of making multiple.

I wanted to work on the idea of escaping or freedom, I wanted a about 9-10 photos together that create one giant photo. I feel that I can not explain it as well as I can visualize it.

But thank you for reading!

Kweku Asafu-Adjaye Post #2

Following my visit to the VMFA in Richmond, I am thinking about how I can play with the sound effects in my video. There is a style of audio called 8D audio. Where with certain speakers and headphones, the sound travels from one side of the room of ear seamlessly to the other. So with my rain scene, I could enhance it with even vocals and have the rain sound like an actually thunderstorm. So with that I'm currently working on studying up and reading/watching some things to learn it. Use headphones or a speaker system and not a laptop speaker with this video.

Post 2

This week I have gotten a general idea of what I am shooting, talked to the people who've agreed to be a part of the project and planned the first photoshoot for Tuesday.

Part I Reflection: One thing that part one talked a lot about how photography is changing and instead of embracing it a lot of fine art photographers talk down on how people who don't use the same tools and methods that they do still call themselves photographers. I think this idea is a little complicated since a lot of people who use iPhone for photography still have skills with the tool they do use.

After that she discusses how we have to just make the work, which is also something that's been discussed in senior show this semester. Instead of overthinking how you're going to do it or what you need, as long as you have an idea you should just go out and make work.

It also goes into details about artist residency programs, which I found interesting.

Chapter 1 Recap: It really got my mind to thinking that I need more structure when it comes to my work. I have to start asking myself more questions like the what's, where's and why's. It just basically opened my eyes more to want I need to be aware of as a photographer. There's more to the process than just snapping a picture and just posting it on instagram or keeping it to yourself. It definitely is about thinking about the reason behind doing a project and just having an answer for everything pertaining to your idea/concept. The more time and effort you put into your idea/concept the more it should grow and have more depth to it than just the idea. But your compositions, color, lighting, set-up and etc. are showing progress also.

This week I took a few shots while I was getting ready. I've finally decided that I want to focus on Self whether that be GRWM or just moments that everyone doesn't necessarily get to see. I've been putting my camera on a continuous timer set for five seconds and in those five seconds it captures like 4-6 images I can't quite remember. I'll probably post and update of what they look like in the next blog post.

For this semester I would like to continue on the lighting style I previously did for seminar 1. What I want to focus on is expanding who and what is in the photos. I'm not sure if I want to continue with the staged narrative look or turn it into a portrait where the subject will be in the location that they feel most comfortable in. For example, if I were to do a sports theme portrait for one of the photos I would put the person on the field that they play on, and not make an action shot but have them holding their gear and dressing as if they were getting ready for a game. All in all, I believe I want to get out and take photos of people at work, sporting events, or anything that allows me to go out and explore. Below are some examples of the nonaction portraits I would attempt to do.

Hey everyone, I've been pretty under the weather this last week and wasn't able to shoot, but there's a lot more I want to do with this concept a far as places. When you look up the definition of the 'presence of absence', it states that it's the ability to render a room/space without people in it while communicating the sense of their being remaining. I going to go to some eating establishments this week and I'm also going to focus more on empty seating areas to try to convey this effect

For this past week, I've spent some time looking through and browsing for other photographers who have photographed food/product. I have found that social media, especially instagram have been very helpful in looking for these kinds of artists as well as finding links to their websites. This current week my goal is to go out and shoot around for both ideas and then begin to form a more complete, detailed, workable plan to settle in on which one I would like to do.

Some of the photographers I have been looking at on instagram are @noobchef_in @erlitakrist @noreenamjad @reneestudio.id @graffi_ty @whitemomentstudio @luxstudiolondon @thebutterywhisk

First Post

This week has mostly been planning for the shows. I know that this semester I want to focus on staged narratives since it's what's interested me the most for a while now. I have a couple ideas but I would like to try to shoot some of them before deciding which one to go with.

Hey guys! I know in terms of you guys I am a week behind with doing some thought into what I want to do this semester. I haven't been able to shoot but I do have a few ideas that I may want to flourish for this semester. I want to focus on motherhood. In this season I know a several people who are in different stages of pregnancy, different stages of learning how to adapt to certain age group behaviors and actions and etc. I want to possible capture the unknown matters that happen behind the scenes for pregnancy the vulnerability, but I also want to capture and continue the essence of self-reflection that I've been focusing on just tuning it in to be a little bit more secured and defined as the semester progresses.

Kweku Asafu-Adjaye

In summary, not much new this week. However I did get some inspiration today from the Virginia Museum of Fine Art visit I made. They had a room for a Frederick Douglass experience with tons of screens. It really reminded me of my piece from piece I'm working on called Psyche. I noticed how they managed to tweak the location of the sound to sit directly behind each screen and how it added to the overall experience. It's definitely something I'm also working on for my Senior Show work.

For this semester I think I want to try and focus on either one of two things I have narrowed down for the time being, as I do not think I want to continue the same project from last semester. I either want to try and make some sort of commercial portfolio for what I am mainly anticipating on working for when I graduate (with product/food photography), or do something more like what I did with the neighborhood project back in photo 2 as recently I have looked back and I really enjoy some of the images that I took from it. The photos below are to reference my previous project.

Gabriel Harris - Found a word that interested me!

Hey Team! I have figured out that I want to make work about escaping. I have an idea of how I want to visualize it, but I have yet to shoot it. I plan on shooting throughout this upcoming week. I am excited to see what comes.

Good luck to you guys!

Artists' Jess Allen, Alec Soth, and Stephen Shore inspired me for my series. Even though each of these artists have different approaches to their work, they each guide me in the direction I want to go in for my own series. I'm inspired by the way these artist present their work and allow their viewers to create their own narrative.

Jess Allen is an oil painter from Dorset, United Kingdom. The theme she sticks to is the "Presence through Absence" and is inspired by the Japanese concept of MA (minimalist aesthetic). Although she's not a photographer, I'm inspired by her concept of space and how she avoids text in her work.

Alec Soth is an American photographer from Minnesota. During his road trips, Soth photographs people and landscapes that are usually in rural or suburban neighborhoods that are often in the Midwest and/or the South. He aims to communicate the weight in a photograph as in the history and time a photograph can carry.

Stephen Shore is another American photographer from New York, NY. Black and white images from the 1960s and photographs with colors in the 1970s moving forward make up his body of work. Shore revolves his work around the idea of problem solving and the use of natural light in his photographs. He is also known for taking a little images as possible of his subject and does very little editing in post.
