I've been in the struggle with shooting as my transmitter for my off-camera flashes died on me and am in the works of ordering a new one. while in this slump I was thinking of going towards a more portrait route and asking the subject to wear what they feel the most comfortable in. In my head, this would express the different but the same of how people are. I still want to go with staged narratives but wanted to widen my parameters and almost let the subject do what they want for there photos.

I think that is a portrait! It is not so interesting to know that you asked them to wear their favorite clothes. What is interesting about a portrait is not telling ....but showing me something about the person. That is what a portrait does. So yes I think you should just make some portraits of people you find interesting. You dont have the flash so how can you use natural light is a fantastic, beautiful, interesting light.
