Roger Evans_Week 11

Hello!

This past week was figuring out the website and making sure all the photos I wanted to put on my website are correctly formatted. I used the Adobe creative cloud portfolio for my website and it was kind of confusing at first but once I got the hang of it, I couldn't stop messing around with it! I pretty much have everything I want on it, I just got to make some more finishing touches. I will post a link to it for week 12.

I also ordered and received my 17x22 paper and the only thing left to do I'd figure the framing out.

Emily Vassar_ week 11

This week I took many and the rest of the photos for my project and I plan to edit them soon. I also fixed the portrait horizon problem.

Emily Vassar_ week 10

This week I worked on creating a website on wix and finding a logo to match my company name, Mei.KngPhotos, which goes with my middle name. I created services and started adding my photos as well.

Alison Miller _ Week 11

 Hey guys,

I know the day is still young, but wanted to go ahead and post so I don't forget. This past week has been busy of managing assignments and getting things flowing or done. I think we are all feeling the pressure of the end of the semester coming.

There isn't too much to update about my site except that I have updated and added a CVV. I have also began the process of preparing and uploading photos which has been a little time consuming trying to decide which ones, but its coming along. So far I have decided to add both the series of the fine art food, separately though as they were created under different intentions (convenience and origins) and the one series from last semester that documented myself as a military spouse. I am going to continue to cull through previous works/series and see what would be a nice compliment to the page, probably at least some work from my "journey" project.

I hope to have enough done to the site to start showing how it's looking soon! Hope everyone is doing well and if any of you figure out how to clone yourself to get more done let me know :) (dorky joke I know haha)

Akira Barnes_Week 10

This week I'm gathering various materials and really trying to make the contents speak to the subject. I learned this week that in my painting studio they have bunch of backdrops and various props. So I have plans to see if there's anything of use in there. I also have plans to start working on my website,  I kinda no idea where to start 😅.  I believe last time we met Alison had mention that Adobe portfolio allowed you build a site , so I'm gonna try starting there. Another concern I have with creating the website is I don't think I'll have a lot of sub sections besides the work from this class and probably my contact info.

So this week will probably be another week of planning and gathering materials.

Akira Barnes _Week 9

After browsing through a few websites two of them stood out to me who are photographers who work I enjoy, Raven B Varona and Andrew Lau.

Raven "Ravie B." Varona is a photographer based in New York. When looking at her portfolio, you'll notice plenty of faces familiar looking faces. She normally is tapped by artist in the music industry to capture their portraits. What I liked about her website is that even though it has the photographer minimalist touch. I like her inclusion of green color and I think it really nice touch to add to website. On her website she just has photographs pertaining to her work. But it breaks down into commercial work, editorials and etc.  She's probably my top photographer at the moment, I really enjoyed her work she did with Beyonce. And it was how I learned of her as well.

Andrew Lau was a photographer I had personally discovered through instagram. His work caught me eye at the time because it centered around street photography and fashion. And I was super interested in shooting sneakers like jordans and nikes. Over the years he has turned his focus on just street photography. What I loved about his website is that he had like a personal photographs tab on his website. It contained pictures from his travels around the world and they were still website quality good.

Questions

1. Are they any designs or things to stay away from when creating a website? Most photographers websites are simple and straight forward. But appearance wise its very boring.

2. It may seem very unprofessional but as a last resort could you use a tumblr as a photograph website?

3. If you don't photograph multiple things had should you create your website to showcase your expertise?

Alison Miller _ Week 10

I feel like we had a great discussion about websites this past week and I enjoyed see how much everyones projects had progressed!

As I mentioned in our meet up I am using Adobe Portfolio. It comes with the creative cloud subscription so technically free and so far seems easy to set up. I did purchase a domain because I am hoping it will motivate me to keep up with it more after getting it going. The purpose of my site is to serve as a portfolio. I am not planning on selling or marketing anything on it yet, but will have a contact page just in case someone is really interested in a piece. So far I am keeping with the simple, clean layout to get everything up and going, but I will probably tweak things as I go. This week I am planning of culling through some work and getting it up and brainstorming on what I want my BIO and CVV to include.

I kinda wish I already had the website ready because at the symposium on Saturday I was asked by a few people if I had one and/or a card. I am now adding a card to the short list of things to get done. :)

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Emily Vassar_ Week 9

Hi all! I hope yalls spring break went well!

For the websites based off of the syllabus, I was surprised at how much I appreciated the minimalistic websites. I usually like the complex and graphically intriguing websites, although I noticed it was more helpful to have it minimal to avoid distractions from the works. I also like the websites that had many options to get information on the artist.

Although I did not like the websites that were hard to navigate or did not have many easy options to look around the site, I also did not like the bold-colored font websites.

My questions are...

Do the artists ever exclude any of their artworks, or do they show all of the art on their websites?

Does one have to have a lot of money to have a website?

Does one need absolutely need a website as a photographer? or can they just use social media?

Roger Evans_Week 9

One artist’s website that I enjoyed was Shane Rocheleau’s. Although his website is kind of plain and just slightly on the bland side, I like how simple it looks. I also like the fact that his biography is nice and short compared to some of the other artist’s websites I looked at. I think if he included some more interesting features or colors, the website would be much better.

http://www.shanerocheleau.com/

I enjoyed Mark Peterson’s website a lot and enjoyed the darker background of the website. It is different from a lot of other artist’s websites who only use the typical white background. His layout is nice but the only thing missing is his biography. Unless I missed it, I didn’t see one and I think every artist website should include somewhat of a biography so viewers of the website can know more about the artist.

I like the layout for McNair Evans’ website because it looks clean and professional. I like how you have to move your curser on the image to see the title of it. If all the titles were there, I feel like it would be a little smushed. Another thing I also liked was the sizing of the text on the different pages.

Three questions I have about websites:

    1. I noticed that a lot of artist's websites have plain, white backgrounds. Is there a reason why people prefer it (if it's distracting) or if it's alright to have a different colored background?

    2. When writing a biography, should it be short and to the point or should it be just lengthy enough that the viewer gets a good understanding of who the artist is? I noticed that there was a mix of short and long biographies.

    3. Is it better to stay professional or throw in a little bit of personality on the website? If that makes sense.

Alison Miller_Week 9

Hope everyone has had a good spring break! Mine was not the greatest and since Tuesday been occupied with a family emergency, but I’ll share the details later when I see y’all.  However, the past day or so I have been getting back on track with my goals of finishing editing for our meet up and looking at the websites from the syllabus.

So far, I have learned that I like websites that are sweet and simple. User friendly essentially, but not so simple that everything is laid out on one page (hope that makes sense.) I like how several of the photographers including the ones I listed break the projects up by names and the navigation bar allows the user to select through them instead of being overwhelmed by a lot of photos. I feel that the average viewer could lose interest quickly, and best to break it up.

I found Martin Parr’s website creative in how he used clipart for the links. Its not my particular style but its neat how it utilizes it without it being too much. I also like how Lynsey Addario has a slideshow of her work scrolling on her homepage. I put Greta’s as a selection also, because I have been helping her with some updates on it and it has helped me appreciate the clean layout that I mentioned earlier as well as how a few of her projects have a caption that pops up when rolling over an image.

As far as the questions I have…

The information put into the Bio/about, is it best to be in the first or third person? Do people honestly really read it? Should it be kept short and sweet?

Headshots? I was told by past instructors to include them on my bio page, but I have seen a mix of websites that do and don’t. What do you think?

I’m sure more questions/thoughts about websites will come up when we talk on Thursday, plus I think I’ve written a lengthy enough post ;) See y’all soon!

Akira Barnes_Book Part 1

The first part of the book was very insightful, I learned things a few things that I didn't know. One of those would be the three kind of main categorizations of how you approach photography. I personally see myself in the experimentation phase considering I really don't know what my "thing" is in photography yet. I also realize while reading this part that I don't really have an idol photographer and I feel like its ok and its not lol. The last thing really stood out to me was that I didn't know there was art residency programs at all. And now that I know they exist I kinda want to look into those more. Because personally I'm not a hundred percent how to keep myself involved in art after school.

Akira Barnes_ Week 7

Hi, you guys so with sets of pictures I'm still experimenting with how I want to arrange the items. And trying to get a feel for what boxes work best for the subject matter. The photos are for Medusa, Thor, and Pandora.

For these Medusa pictures I know I still need some snakes to really push the concept. But as mentioned before I'm still mainly focusing on arrangement and presentation.

These set of photos are for Thor, for a brief background, some of you guys may be familiar with Thor. He's Norse god of Thunder, but he is also associated with weather. He one of most well known gods and is known to be a drinker and associated with fertility.

For these pictures this was my attempt in redoing Pandora's Box. For a refresher, Pandora open's a box she wasn't suppose to open releasing all the sickness in the world. My attempt is represent the opposite of that.  I was thinking of maybe for this box I could write a little note that says "sorry :)" or something in that realm.

If anyone has any suggestions on whether the new background I'm using works. Or whether having multiple boxes or just a singular works.  I'm open to any suggestions.
