Emily Vassar_week 3_ project post

This week I decided to go with Greta's advice and do myself first, I took a bunch of shots with the white paint idea to show the "whitewashed" stereotype.

This week I plan to keep on shooting more the self-view or myself view of Asian American stereotypes.

Emily Vassar_Chapter1

While reading  Crusade for Your Art Best Practices For Fine Art Photographers by Jennifer Schwartz, I learned that when photographers start out they often fall into three categories such as nature, people, and landscapes. To be honest I used to always think that these were honestly the only things people could photograph.  Although throughout my time in photo seminar 1 and now starting photo seminar 2 I began to understand the connection on what other things people can photograph.

I also found the advice from Paula very helpful, it honestly reminded me of Bob Ross, and how we as artists can make happy mistakes.

Dominick Bellamy_Week 3_Project Post

I took some pictures a few setups that I had in mind to see what worked and what didn't work. I setup the photos to have a calm, peaceful serenity to them. I wanted the photos to represent the therapeutic side of music. Some are still just work in progress, but I have more ideas in mind that I will be setting up this week to photograph. Some of the ideas are experimental, but some I think will come out well fitting what I want to do. I also saw the IG Post that you posted Greta and I think I can find a way to incorporate it into what I'm going for.

I have more, but I figured that I should show some and wait until critique to show them all.

Roger Evans_Book Part 1

After reading the introduction and part one of the book, I can tell this book is going to have a lot of insightful information. In the introduction, the author talks about people who call themselves photographers because they have an iPhone that takes amazing photos. In my opinion, I always find those types of people to annoy me, but I do admit, it's pretty interesting how far technology has come.

A section that stood out to me was on page five where the author discusses that when photographers start out, they "make work that roughly falls into the categories (people, landscape, nature), but over time as he or she becomes seriously interested in pursuing exhibitions and other fine art photography opportunities, the images become more concept-based" (pg. 5). I think that is very accurate and can say that when I first got my camera, those were the only things I took photos of. I never thought about taking photos that had a lot of concept.

I like the advice that Paula Tognerelli gives in her section on page seven. She first talks about the advice given to her as a child which was "look under stones" (pg. 7) which I feel like is very important advice. She also advises to not be afraid of making mistakes which I feel like most people do. I've learned that some mistakes can be good.

Alison Miller_Book Part 1

The introduction and part one of the book so far seems like this is going to be an interesting read. I like how she discusses the stages of experimentation, technical competence and stylistic development. I feel like this was a relatable explanation to exploring myself as a photography and trying to discover what I am wanting to do in the long run of being a photographer. I still don't know completely, but am enjoying the exploration of these stages.

Another topic I find interesting is the residency programs she mentions. That first paragraph is completely true right? I felt that being in the academic setting allowed me that time to focus on the work, well because I had to. Outside of that it is hard. Having the time to consider a "residency program" seems unrealistic at the moment, but perhaps a must on my bucket list in the future.

On to Part II!

 Hey everyone,

Not too much to update this week as I unfortunately came down with Covid this week. While I am thankful I didn't suffer most of the "cold" symptoms, the fatigue and headaches made it hard to be motivated to do much of anything that involved movement.

I am feeling better, not 100% myself, but getting there. I will be back to school this week playing catch up. Look forward to seeing how y'all's projects are coming along!

Roger Evans_Week 3_Project Post

This week, I worked on two more compositions. One required the use of a classroom, so I had to wait until after 10pm one night to get one to myself. Since I don’t have many friends who are able to help be in my photos, I had to take multiple photos of the same shot with different clothes to be other people in the photo. Here is a screenshot of what I mean.

Of course, I took multiple shots, these are just the final ones I somewhat liked. After editing it and stitching all the photos together, I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. So, I will be going back late tonight to take some more photos.

Also, I had an idea that I wanted to use a projector. I don't have access to any projectors but then remembered that one of my friends does and asked her if I could borrow it. She said yes, so I will be going over to her apartment on Sunday to see what kind of compositions and ideas I can come up with.

Next week, I will be working on two more compositions.

Dom I just took this off instagram. I thought it was clever and funny. I know this is not what you are doing at all but perhaps think outside the box a little and see what else you can come up with.

Dominick Bellamy_Week 2_Progress Post

This week I have just been working and planning out concepts and ways to make them work through stills. I worked on one concept using my laptop and headphones with blue cool lighting to try and recreate a working environment with a calm atmosphere. I will be posting some progress pictures next week.

Emily Vassar _ Week 2_Project Post

For this project, I am honestly struggling badly. I decided to try the suggestion to take photos without overthinking, I instantly became stumped. so within the remaining of the week, I came up with a couple specific ideas to capture.

*Reaching out to Asian Americans and taking pictures of the opposite of Asian stereotypes.

-group different Asian American
-a football Asian American
-an Asian American person with their pet dog or cat
- an Asian American person who has a nice car

although I will run out of ideas, that's why I'm struggling so much.

*I also thought of leaving it self  related based

-a self-portrait of me having washed-out white paint running down my face to show "whitewashed"
-a portrait of me holding a photo of my American family
-portrait of me with beauty stereotypes written on my face
- a picture of me looking into a mirror, but the person in the mirror is something that I'm not, that people expect me to be.

*or I was thinking of doing both self and other Asian American stereotyped struggles.

Right now I'm still doing the research part and gathering items. So far I've researched Norse mythology and took a look back at Greek mythology. I posted a picture of which figures i'm focusing on right now, if anyone has any suggestions for items I can put in certain boxes, please share. At the moment I think I'm going to start shooting for Nymphs since the items are pretty easy to obtain.

 Hey everyone!

So, I decided I would start with the food project and ponder on the other idea a little longer. I spent some time this week researching a few foods that I wanted to get started with photographing this weekend. Well, a combination of the grocery shortage and the winter storm did put a damper in some selections and my lights were not wanting to sync with my new camera, but I made it work. I technically only photographed two items, but I shot a lot to get in the flow of it.  Here are a few to show (may not be final selects) and I also included some fun facts about the food item.

The earliest traces of bread are found in history around 8000 BC in the Middle East.

(Pre) Sliced Bread was invented in 1928 by Otto Frederick Rohwedder from Iowa. Well, he invented and patented the machine to achieve this. The Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri was the first company to sell the product “Kleen Maid Sliced Bread.”

The first cookies can be dated back to as early as 7th Century A.D. Persia (Iran).

The chocolate chip cookie originated in the Whitman, Massachusetts around 1938 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, who chopped up a Nestle chocolate bar and added it to the cookie recipe.

Roger Evans_Week 2_Project Post

I have decided that each week, I am going to work on one or two compositions of photographs. I am deciding to do this so that I can fully flesh out each idea and make sure I can put great effort into each photo. For my lighting photography project, The sad/happy theme didn't come until last minute, so I didn't have time to fully get the perfect compositions and it just looked rushed for some photos.

So, for this past week, I sat down and planned out some ideas for photos and I think I came up with some interesting ones which I'm excited for. I also started taking photos for my first image which is the mirror shot where I am distraught looking into the mirror but happy looking back to contrast how I feel on the inside versus what I look like on the outside.

I took multiple photos in my room with my mirror, but I went to the studio to take some more professional setting photos. Next week, I plan on working on two more sets of images.

Also, Allison, what you said about playing with the idea that happiness/sadness is experienced differently by others is really interesting and I think I could also play around with that!

Dominick Bellamy (Week 1 Proposal)

I would like to be able to continue my music series that I started in Photo 3. I want to focus on trying to convey the feelings that you get from listening or making music in pictures. For example, when listening to some music it kind of gives an out of world experience and I would convey this by using slow shutter speed techniques I used in my Time Series. People also listen to music to get through tough situations so I would set up still lives trying to convey these uplifting, calm, or sad moments involving musical elements.

Akira Barnes (Week 1) Proposal

For my project this semester I would like to build upon the work I created last semester with the starter kits. Last semester my project mainly focused on figures from greek mythology with a few from christianity and ancient Egypt. For this project what I would like to do differently is to create set ups for the photos, where it looks more like product photography. And experiment with lighting a little more. I would also like the boxes to contain contents more catered to the individual I'm focusing on. For example if I did Poseidon , the god of water, I could put his items in a fish bowl instead of a box.

Also if possible I would like to focus on other mythologies and folklore because Greek mythology is so common. Focusing back on the product photography, I was thinking of maybe creating like a type of add spread for the photos. That way I could include different types of angles of the subject and I think it would be cool presentation wise.

Here's some example of the magazine spread. I don't want to do exactly this but as you can see different angles of the subject are being shown.

For my project proposal, I want to create new work.  I want to create a project along the lines of showing the struggles of being an adopted Asian American.

I either felt "too white" to hang out with Asians or "too Asian" to hang out with other races.

I was too white because I was adopted into a middle-class American family, who had no Asian traditions. I often felt excluded from my Asian peers

I was too Asian to hang out with other races because I was often stereotyped. people assumed I was too geeky to hang out with them or I ate too many cats to be in a house where someone had cats as pets. people automatically thought I was a straight=A, 4.0 GPA student.  I often felt inadequate about not living to my Asian ability many people expected me to be like.

Honestly, I am not sure how I will go about taking these pictures without them looking cheesy or unreadable, but I plan to research more on them to gain inspiration.

Roger Evans_Project Proposal

I am going to be sticking with the same theme I did from photo seminar 1 but I am changing it up a bit. While the whole series brought up feelings of loneliness and emptiness, I now want to capture feelings of happiness. I want to explore contrasts between sad and happy if that makes sense. I have attached some photos I did for my lighting photography final project. Each photo shows the contrast between sad and happy.

The idea behind this image is that I like to hang out with friends but sometimes my sadness gets in the way, and I don't talk as much as I would like. The happy side of the image has a bit of transparency because it's like me imagining what I wish I could be doing.

The idea behind this image inspired the whole project. I took inspiration from comedy/tragedy masks you see in theaters. So, this image is as simple as happy versus sad.

The idea behind this image is that sometimes I get in my head too much and it keeps me from enjoying certain things. The happy side of the image shows me reading a book and keeping my mind occupied and actually enjoying my time.

The idea behind this image is exactly how it looks. Sad on the inside but happy on the outside.

There are more images, but these are the ones I liked the best from that project. To further this project, I would like to recreate the images I didn't really care too much for because they either didn't have all the effort, I would have liked to put into them, or they just weren't successful images to me personally. I would also like to recreate these ones as well.

Alison Miller_Week 1_Project Post

Hey everyone, welcome back! Hope yall’s spring semester is off to great start. I know I am trying to get back into the routine of things while avoiding getting sick (it’s a lot harder when you have kids trust me).

As mentioned when we met last week, for my project proposal I am wanting to work in still life. I have two concepts that I am churning on in my mind. One is revisiting, again, the “Food for Thought” project. However, narrowing down a more solid theme. Before I had focused on health, environmental and so on aspects and honestly that tended to get overwhelming as it felt hypocritical as some points. So the idea I am having is focusing on a cultural aspect. America is a melting pot of many different cultures, each one bringing their own culinary traditions. I would like to explore the staple foods of the American cuisine and/or the origins of them. I would photograph selected foods in the Renaissance/Dutch style like before as food in those paintings were symbolic of the culture and country they were created.

The second idea is something that spontaneously came up and I’m not sure yet its quite possible in one project, but it starts with the question: Why is the number 7 considered lucky? After a brief reading, turns out this numbers luck or superstition origins can be dated to ancient times. It is in many cultures, religions, and everyday life. Just a few examples, the 7 deadly sins, 7 days of the week, 7 notes in musical scales, 7 colors in the rainbow… I found it interesting and not sure if it’s completely possible, but it has sparked a curiosity and some brainstorming.

This upcoming week will be spent on some research… any thoughts, ideas, or even your favorite food please feel free to share with me!
