Emily Vassar_week 1_ project post
For my project proposal, I want to create new work. I want to create a project along the lines of showing the struggles of being an adopted Asian American.
I either felt "too white" to hang out with Asians or "too Asian" to hang out with other races.
I was too white because I was adopted into a middle-class American family, who had no Asian traditions. I often felt excluded from my Asian peers
I was too Asian to hang out with other races because I was often stereotyped. people assumed I was too geeky to hang out with them or I ate too many cats to be in a house where someone had cats as pets. people automatically thought I was a straight=A, 4.0 GPA student. I often felt inadequate about not living to my Asian ability many people expected me to be like.
Honestly, I am not sure how I will go about taking these pictures without them looking cheesy or unreadable, but I plan to research more on them to gain inspiration.
Hi Emily!
ReplyDeleteYou have a strong concept here! I look forward to seeing how you translate it into a visual story and further sharing your story with us.
A really great idea! You are asking so many important questions. I think you should just make some photographs and see what happens without overthinking it too much at this point.
ReplyDeleteHey Emily, I think this is pretty good idea. I'm kinda with you how you would portray this. One idea that came to mind was Cindy Sherman and how she photographed herself. Idk if you remember watching the doc about her, but she would dress up as certain characters to address stereotypes.
