Jedara Reyes The Project

I still remain immensely eager about the project I started last semester in Photo Seminar 1, Emporia, Virginia however I really want to include the people aspect it so desperately needs and I do not want to do that during COVID-19. Therefore, that leaves me to create a new project or work on my commercial portfolio. I do want to try my hand at another project based here in Norfolk based around Black women. I tend to/always make work on Black people and that is not something I intend to change. I want my work to serve my community first and foremost. However, I will be graduating soon and will need a strong portfolio. I will be graduating with a teaching license and plan to teach as soon as possible.

My big project would be focused on describing the African American woman experience covering adultification, fetishization, colorism, power dynamiccs, stereotypes, and Black culture. I feel art is the best way to bring light to issues when you can visualize them and we are becoming a society of people who are willing to listen and learn creating the best time for a project like this. Again though, COVID-19 presents itself in a way I do not want in my project. The portfolio would be a collection of my best work showing my strengths and I should refine what I think I'm good at and become workable at the things I'm not good at. I also think I could push out more content for a commercial portfolio since COVID-19 is not as pertinent for the aspects of the portfolio. Ultimately, I will probably choose to work on the portfolio.

  1. Putting together a portfolio is a lot like creating your website. What is it's purpose is an important question. You say you want to go into teaching so your portfolio and website should be geared to that. What should one have in a portfolio to show prospective teaching jobs? Are you interested in other kinds of commercial work? what kinds? If you are you should make a project that addresses them. Your work on Emporia does not NEED to ave people. Thisnk about the loney scarred feeling created by the night photographs of the underground railroad site. https://www.jmbalesphotography.com/through-darkness-to-light-photographs-along-the-underground-railroad-2002-2016
