Hey everyone, welcome back! Hope yall’s spring semester is off to great start. I know I am trying to get back into the routine of things while avoiding getting sick (it’s a lot harder when you have kids trust me).
As mentioned when we met last week, for my project proposal I am wanting to work in still life. I have two concepts that I am churning on in my mind. One is revisiting, again, the “Food for Thought” project. However, narrowing down a more solid theme. Before I had focused on health, environmental and so on aspects and honestly that tended to get overwhelming as it felt hypocritical as some points. So the idea I am having is focusing on a cultural aspect. America is a melting pot of many different cultures, each one bringing their own culinary traditions. I would like to explore the staple foods of the American cuisine and/or the origins of them. I would photograph selected foods in the Renaissance/Dutch style like before as food in those paintings were symbolic of the culture and country they were created.
The second idea is something that spontaneously came up and I’m not sure yet its quite possible in one project, but it starts with the question: Why is the number 7 considered lucky? After a brief reading, turns out this numbers luck or superstition origins can be dated to ancient times. It is in many cultures, religions, and everyday life. Just a few examples, the 7 deadly sins, 7 days of the week, 7 notes in musical scales, 7 colors in the rainbow… I found it interesting and not sure if it’s completely possible, but it has sparked a curiosity and some brainstorming.
This upcoming week will be spent on some research… any thoughts, ideas, or even your favorite food please feel free to share with me!
They are both interesting ideas. I do not know how to proceed with the number 7 either but there is something there. I love the food.
ReplyDeleteHey Allison, I think the cultural aspect for the food still life could be pretty interesting. I think the Renaissance/Dutch style could be cool. You could try out different background and lighting to represent those kinds of paintings you talked about.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the number 7 idea could be an interesting theme also. It would be different, but I think it would be cool to find things that represent each example like for 7 days a week, to take portraits or something else that represent each day like, Monday is downcast but then you get to Friday and you're happy. Whatever you decide to do, I think will be interesting!
Hi, Alison I think both ideas have potential. I think if you get enough ideas about the lucky 7 you should try that out first. Your food still lives are really solid. I think one idea you could do is like get real bizarre and outlandish with your set-ups, or the food you chose.
